Dubai does luxury better than almost anywhere — gold-plated everything, seven-star hotels, supercars on every corner. But here is what the glossy adverts do not tell you: it is also surprisingly easy to enjoy on a budget. Some of the city best experiences are free or nearly so, and with a few smart choices you can have an incredible trip without emptying your account.

The best free things to do in Dubai

You could fill several days without spending a dirham on attractions:

• The Dubai Fountain show — the famous choreographed water-and-light show runs every 30 minutes each evening at The Dubai Mall, and it is completely free to watch from the promenade. World-class, and it costs nothing.
• JBR Beach and Kite Beach — clean, well-maintained public beaches, free to enter, perfect for a whole day of sun and swimming. Kite Beach has food trucks and a running track too.
• Al Fahidi Historic District — wander the atmospheric wind-tower lanes of old Dubai for free, and soak up the history.
• The abra across Dubai Creek — a genuine slice of local life on a traditional wooden water taxi, for just one dirham.
• The souks — window-shopping the Gold and Spice Souks costs nothing and is an experience in itself.
• La Mer and City Walk — stylish outdoor districts that are free to stroll, with street art and people-watching.
• Dubai Marina and JBR Walk — a beautiful free waterfront promenade, especially at sunset.

Affordable paid attractions that are genuinely worth it

You do not have to skip the icons to stay on budget. Some of Dubai best-value tickets are among its cheapest:

• The Dubai Frame — a landmark view over old and new Dubai for a small price.
• The Dubai Fountain Lake Ride — a close-up boat view of the fountain show for very little.
• A Dhow Cruise Creek dinner — a scenic cruise and a full dinner together, often cheaper than a restaurant meal alone.
• A shared evening desert safari — hours of activities plus dinner and a show, at a very reasonable per-person rate.

Eat like a local, not a tourist

Food is where budgets quietly blow out — or stay firmly in check. Skip the tourist-strip restaurants with the sky-high Marina views, and head to the neighbourhoods where Dubai huge expat population actually eats.

Areas like Al Karama, Deira, Bur Dubai and Satwa are packed with outstanding Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Lebanese and Egyptian food at a fraction of tourist prices. A hearty shawarma costs a few dirhams. A South Indian thali or a plate of biryani is filling and cheap. A fresh juice from a corner cafe beats a hotel mocktail on both taste and price. Eating well in Dubai does not have to be expensive — it just has to be local.

Get around cheaply

Transport adds up fast if you rely on taxis. The smart move:

• The Dubai Metro is clean, fast, air-conditioned and cheap. Buy a Nol card and use it across the Metro, buses and trams. It reaches most modern attractions, including the airport, Downtown and Marina.
• The Dubai Tram and public buses fill in the gaps at low cost.
• For attractions the Metro does not reach — like the desert — a shared group tour is far cheaper than a private car, and includes the experience itself.
• Walk the districts — Downtown, Marina and the old town are all walkable, which saves money and shows you more.

The single biggest money-saver: bundle

This is the tip that saves the most, and the one travellers most often miss. Booking your hotel, transfers and attractions separately almost always costs more than a package that combines them. Operators secure rates that individuals cannot, and pass the saving on.

Travel in the low season for the biggest savings

Timing is the biggest lever of all. Hotel rates in summer (June to August) can be half the winter price for the very same room. If you can handle the heat and plan your days around indoor attractions and early mornings, summer is by far the cheapest time to visit. A few more everyday savings

• Book attractions online — gate prices are almost always higher than advance online rates.
• Refill water — carry a bottle; tap water is safe and malls have fountains.
• Use happy hours and brunch deals — Dubai famous brunches can be surprisingly good value for what you get.
• Stay slightly outside the very centre — a hotel near a Metro station a few stops out can be much cheaper for an easy commute.
